This is not a health tip–thanks to a weird craving today, I discover that it tastes way better than my usual tuna+mayo mixture! And I really like mayo, so that’s saying a lot.


2. High-low skirts…are actually super flattering and fun. I highly recommend you try one.

3. Ordering things online > buying things at the store.

Putting aside all of the logical reasons, online shopping means presents at your doorstep. ‘Nuff said.


This Monday I am extremely grateful for perspective. A constant, healthy dose of it helps us live our lives to the fullest–and who doesn’t want to do that?

So here are some things that have been helping to shape my perspective lately:

I saw this at an art show recently, and loved it. It reminded me a lot of Story People, which is one of my favorite sources of perspective.

Weekend road trips are so, so very good for the mind. Especially when the scenery is this good.

And finally, good music always reminds me to widen my gaze on life, and I have been listening to some really good music lately.

Truth: I will take any opportunity to dance. Sometimes involuntarily, just because there is music playing.

Second truth: As you know, peanut butter and jelly is my favorite meal.

Third truth: I became a real Sesame Street fan when I was a teenager. I dig what the show is about. And also Grover.

Fourth truth: For as shy as I can be, I am not afraid of looking silly in public if it means helping other people get past their own inhibitions and have a good time.

Bottom line: I have found a new must-see band.

Let’s be honest, when I read that Koo Koo Kanga Roo described themselves as “the Beastie Boys multiplied by Sesame Street plus the driving dance beats of Daft Punk and the live show antics of the Flaming Lips,” I knew we had a winner.

So if you want to have probably the most out-of-your-seat fun you will have at a concert, check this band out while they are still on tour. Even my husband, who claims he absolutely does not dance was dancing. So now you have to go.

And with that endorsement, here’s what I am grateful for today:

1. Hot showers – My favorite temperature is approximately 81 degrees Fahrenheit, but paying a heating bill to maintain that temperature in my house would be prohibitive. I am positive, however, that my bathroom hits that temperature when I take a shower. It’s wonderful, and I always feel so refreshed afterward.

2. Flowers from Trader Joe’s – I don’t see the point in shelling out a lot of cash for flowers as a present (unless maybe they are a living plant…and even then, I’m still not sure how I feel about it), but as I’ve said before, I think Trader Joe’s has beautiful, cheery bouquets. My husband surprised me with one tonight as a congratulations-for-completing-your-first-day-of-work present.

3. Basic human kindness – Being new is hard. Change is hard. Facing the unknown is very hard. Aren’t we lucky there are plenty of humans on Earth who are willing to help someone else out, be it via a friendly word of advice, an encouraging text, or even a guided trip to the office supply room? I know I am.

4. Sleep – I am hoping to get some tonight, so I had better finish this post so that I can compete my last final of the quarter and send it in!

It’s that time again, folks: the time when we redirect our attention from our daily cares to what’s making our lives a little (or a lot) easier. Let Grateful Monday begin!

1. My husband – I know he was #1 last time as well, but you might as well get used to it! Anyone who is always willing to drop what he’s doing to help you deal with whatever is stressing you out at the moment. Let’s just say I got a lot of sympathy massages this weekend.

2. My therapist – I started going to therapy because I wanted to learn to face, recognize, and deal with my emotions, and this week my therapist has me writing down what emotion I am feeling every hour. At first, I really resented the assignment, but after only five days of this, I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. Life is still hard, and now I actually have to feel my emotions, but I am very much comforted by the fact that I am right there, living it instead of busy-ing it away.

3. Sabbaths – Thanks to our very wise pastor, my husband and I have been setting aside one day a week in which to rest (get away from everyday responsibilities and cares, putting down our laptops, and spending some time with ourselves, each other, and God too). This week we went to the planetarium and science museum, did a little shopping and browsed the Barnes and Noble magazine racks, and feasted on frozen yogurt.  Sabbaths get me through the week.

4. People who living thoughtfully and deliberately – I read this post from Fit and Feminist, quoted below, and the former English major whose senior paper examined Third Wave perspectives got very excited.*

What it all comes down to is this persistent societal belief that women’s bodies do not belong to them.  They belong to society, government, husbands, dudes on the street, randos on the internet – everybody but the women themselves.  And because I’m really not all that keen on acting like our bodies are somehow divorced from ourselves, I’ll just come out and say it – in the eyes of many, we are simply not people.

…Your means of resistance is most likely different from mine, and that’s okay, because what matters the most is that you have the right to choose for yourself.

*The current SNL fan was very excited as well.

5. New Music – Specifically within this post by audiofanaticsociety, in which I discovered Beach Fossils and then subsequently reminisced about my old music blog. I really need to get back into it.

Ps. Props to Spencer (the blog’s author), who is apparently also a big Justin Vernon fan–and who featured his new release in the same post as a Gregory Alan Isakov song. Very cool, Spencer.
